The short answer
Few car rental programs are free beyond a trial. In October 2026 the real options are a free plan, such as Odobase Starter or Odoo’s one free app, a free tier with usage limits, such as CalendrCar, or open source you host yourself, such as BookCars. Most well-known rental tools offer only a 7 to 15-day trial. Choose by fleet size, hosting and the paperwork you need.
Search for free car rental software and you will find long lists, but most of the tools on them are free only for a 7 to 15-day trial. This guide lists the options you can actually keep using without paying, as their own websites describe them on 23 October 2026, and the well-known tools that offer only a trial. We make Odobase, which is on the list; the facts for every other tool come from its own pages.
What counts as free car rental software?
Three kinds of free hold up beyond the first weeks:
- A free plan: a hosted plan with limits, such as a number of vehicles or users, that you can stay on for as long as you fit them.
- A free tier with usage limits: free until your bookings or activity pass a threshold.
- Open source: free to download and change, but you host, update and secure it yourself.
A free trial is different: it gives you a paid plan for a short time and then ends.
Which car rental software is free in 2026?
| Software | Free option | What the free option includes | Hosting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odobase | Starter plan, no time limit | Up to 2 vehicles: self-drive hire and chauffeured trips on one calendar, a driver app, price lists, a booking form and invoicing | Online, in the browser |
| Odoo | One app free, unlimited users | One app, such as Rental, with the apps it depends on; a second app moves you to a paid plan | Odoo Online |
| Odoo Community | Open source | Fleet records; the Rental app is in the paid Enterprise edition only | Your own server |
| CalendrCar | Perso plan | Unlimited bookings and vehicles, maintenance and insurance alerts and an embeddable schedule, below a usage index; customers, contracts and invoices need a paid plan | Online |
| BookCars | Open source (MIT) | An admin panel for cars, locations, customers, bookings and payments, a customer website and mobile apps | Your own server or Docker |
| Ownima | Free to use, in beta | An owner CRM and a booking website, with no commission | Online |
Sofcar, a Spanish provider, also advertises a freemium plan “with no limitations”, but its page publishes no limits or paid prices and dates from 2020, so check the current offer with them.
What does each free option suit?
- Odobase suits a small rental or chauffeur company that wants hires, trips, drivers and invoices in one place, and to move to a paid plan priced by fleet size later without moving its data. It has no online payments.
- Odoo suits a company already using Odoo, or one that wants to start with rental alone and add accounting or a website later as paid apps.
- CalendrCar suits a very small fleet that mainly needs a booking calendar, and is happy to pay later for customers, contracts and invoices.
- BookCars suits a company with a developer who can host and maintain it, and wants a customer website with online payments.
- Ownima suits an owner who wants a free booking website and accepts that the product is in beta.
Which car rental software only offers a free trial?
These well-known tools have no free plan, only a trial before a paid plan, according to their pricing pages:
| Software | Free trial | Paid plans from |
|---|---|---|
| Booqable | 14 days | 29 dollars a month, billed yearly |
| HQ Rental Software | 7 days | 120 dollars a month for 10 vehicles, plus a one-time onboarding fee |
| RentSyst | 14 days | 55 euros a month for up to 15 vehicles |
| TopRentApp | 15 days | 99 euros a month for 10 vehicles |
| Coastr | 14 days | Prices on its pricing page |
How do you choose free car rental software?
Start from your fleet and your paperwork. Count the vehicles and people who will use it in the next year and check the free plan’s limits. Decide whether you want software that someone else hosts or are ready to run a server. Check that it covers what your customers and your country expect: rental contracts, invoices with the right tax details, and any official reporting. And look at what happens when you outgrow the free option: how much the next plan costs, and whether your data stays where it is.
If you are not ready for software at all, our free car rental booking spreadsheet and car rental invoice template are a sound start, and our guide on how to stop double-booking explains what to watch for.

Frequently asked questions
Is there really free car rental software?
Yes, but less than search results suggest. Free plans (Odobase Starter, Odoo’s one free app), free tiers with usage limits (CalendrCar) and open source you host yourself (BookCars) are free to use. Many others offer only a 7 to 15-day free trial of a paid plan.
What is the difference between a free plan and a free trial?
A free plan stays free as long as you stay within its limits, such as a number of vehicles. A free trial gives you a paid plan for a few days or weeks, after which you pay or stop using it.
Is open source car rental software free?
The software is free to download, but you host, update and secure it yourself, or pay someone to. BookCars, for example, is MIT-licensed and runs on your own server or in Docker, with no hosting or support included.
Can I download free car rental software for Windows?
Most current rental software runs in a web browser rather than as a Windows download, so it works on Windows, Mac or a tablet. Odobase, Odoo Online and CalendrCar all run in the browser. Self-hosted open source runs on your own server.
Which free car rental software is best for a small fleet?
For a few cars and one office, a hosted free plan is the least work. Compare what the free plan includes and what happens when you outgrow it, and check that it covers your paperwork, such as contracts, invoices and any reporting your country requires.
